Driving Guide for Morocco
Everything a tourist needs to know before getting behind the wheel

Basic rules
- Drive on the RIGHT side of the road in Morocco
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers
- Using a phone while driving is prohibited (fine: 300 MAD / ~30 EUR)
- Children under 10 must sit in the back seat
- Honking is tolerated in cities but prohibited at night in residential areas
Speed limits
- Highway: 120 km/h (frequent fixed and mobile speed cameras)
- National road: 80-100 km/h
- Urban area: 40-60 km/h
- Warning: speed cameras are very common on highways, respect the limits
- If fined, pay on the spot or at a police station (keep the receipt)
Fuel & Gas Stations
- Petrol and diesel are available everywhere on major roads
- Average price: Petrol ~13 MAD/L (~1.20 EUR), Diesel ~11 MAD/L (~1.00 EUR)
- Stations are rare in the south and mountain areas — fill up before heading out
- Most stations accept credit cards
- Highway stations are open 24/7
Highways & Tolls
- Morocco has an excellent highway network (Casablanca-Tangier, Casa-Marrakech, Casa-Agadir)
- Tolls: cash or Jawaz card (electronic badge)
- Example fares: Casa → Marrakech ~100 MAD (~10 EUR), Casa → Tangier ~170 MAD (~17 EUR)
- Rest areas are clean with restaurants and gas stations
- Highways are well-lit and in good condition
Hazards & Precautions
- Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists on national roads
- Donkeys, sheep and camels may cross the road in the south
- Roundabouts are common: priority is to the RIGHT (vehicle already in has priority)
- Mountain roads: tight curves, sometimes no guardrails — drive carefully
- Avoid driving at night on secondary roads (poor lighting, pedestrians hard to see)
- In mountain fog, slow down and use fog lights
Parking
- Informal parking attendants are everywhere — tip them 2-5 MAD (~0.50 EUR)
- Underground/guarded parking costs 5-20 MAD/hour in cities
- Never leave valuable items visible in the car
- Blue zones are paid (tickets from machine or attendant)

Practical tips
- Download Google Maps or Maps.me offline maps before your trip
- Always carry: driving license, passport, rental contract
- Moroccan roads are generally in good condition on main routes
- Bring water and snacks for long southern roads
- GPS can be unreliable in medinas — trust local signage
- A small tip (5-10 MAD / ~1 EUR) is appreciated for spontaneous help
